Project Update: Nueces County Airport

Building Solutions for a Durable and Sustainable Airport Terminal

As many witnessed first-hand after Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast in 2017, many local airports are critical logistic hubs after major windstorm events. In many cases, these runways and terminals are the only way in and out of coastal towns until crews can clean up roads and highways.

Designers with RS&H were hired to design a new General Aviation Terminal for the Nueces County Airport in Robstown, TX.

A few challenges came with the project:

  • The new terminal would require a highly durable, hurricane-resistant design, able to withstand harsh storms and disasters.
  • The original design of this modern aviation terminal required multiple structural assemblies to be integrated together to achieve the needed lateral resistance in a high wind zone.
  • The hot-humid Texas climate makes it a challenge for building owners to keep both building occupants comfortable and energy costs low.

The challenges faced by the design team could have been met with expensive, complicated wall systems, requiring multiple trades and building components.

Simpler Solutions, Stronger Construction

The design team with RS&H found an integrated, hurricane-resistant, energy-efficient solution for Nueces County by building with the Bautex wall system.

The Bautex wall system is, at its core, a structural concrete design which stands up to high winds and debris impact. Buildings built with Bautex stood strong last year when Hurricane Harvey impacted the Texas coast.

By choosing Bautex, the designers were also able to simplify the design of the insulation and enclosure system for the terminal. The insulation and thermal mass of the Bautex system work together to deliver highly energy-efficient walls that won’t deteriorate over time. This performance will result in year-over-year operating savings for the county and exceeds the 2015 IECC code requirements for mass wall systems by 250%.

The team at Bautex worked with the architect, engineer and general contractor to ensure a successful design and build using the Bautex Wall System. The construction crew has already stacked and poured the walls for the facility and finishes are being applied to the structure. The general contractor only had to mobilize one subcontractor to get the walls completely built, saving the client time, money and headaches. The design team only had to detail one system to achieve the structural, safety, and efficiency demands of this project, saving time and reducing chances for errors.

While the benefits of using Bautex will be seen for years to come for the owner, the real value comes in simplifying and accelerating the design and construction processes.
